If you want to update your WiFi name and password, here are quick and straightforward methods.
You can manually make changes using the Admin Tool, the gateway’s management page at http://10.0.0.1.
Log in to your gateway to adjust usernames, passwords, parental controls, network settings, firewall, and open or closed ports. Access the Admin Tool via the web or the Xfinity app.
You might see the network name labeled “SSID” and the password as “Network Key.”
If instructions are not needed, go straight to the Admin Tool.
Why Update Your Network Name and Password?
Creating your network name and password keeps your home network secure from unauthorized users, viruses, and other risks. Without protection, others can:
- Use your internet.
- Access files on your devices.
- Steal private information like passwords or credit card numbers.
Logging In to the Admin Tool
Connect your laptop, phone, or tablet to the network. Open a web browser and visit http://10.0.0.1.
- If you’ve updated the Admin Tool username and password, use that to log in.
- If not, use these default credentials:
- Username: admin
-
- Password: password
If you forgot your updated login details, perform a factory reset. Click LOGIN to proceed.
Note: The screen may vary depending on your gateway model, but the steps remain the same.
Updating the Admin Tool Password
After logging in, the page prompts you to create a new Admin Tool ID and password.
- Click Change Password at the top right.
- Enter a new password with:
- At least eight characters.
- Both uppercase and lowercase letters.
- At least one number.
- Re-enter the password in the confirmation field and click SAVE.
Use the new ID and password the next time you log in to the Admin Tool.
Change WiFi Name and Password
Use an Ethernet cable or connect to your in-home WiFi network (not “xfinitywifi”) on a laptop, phone, or tablet.
If your WiFi name and password are still the default, check the label on your gateway for this information.
Steps to Change:
- Open a browser and go to http://10.0.0.1.
- Navigate to Gateway > Connection > Wi-Fi in the menu.
- Under Private Wi-Fi Network, find the network name (SSID). Write it down.
- Click Edit to update the network name.
- If your gateway shows two networks (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), edit both names. Use the same name for both.
- If you don’t see these options, check your gateway’s instructions.
To view your password, check Show Network Password. Write it down. Update the name or password fields and click SAVE SETTINGS.
Reconnect all devices to the updated network name and password.
Reset Gateway if Necessary:
If you forget the name or password and cannot log in, reset the gateway:
- Unplug the gateway.
- Hold the Reset button.
- Plug it back in while holding the button for 30 seconds.
- Wait for the gateway to restart.
Log in using the default credentials on the gateway label. Update the name and password again.
Security Mode:
The default security mode is WPA/WPA2, which provides strong security. Older devices may not support this mode.
Advanced Settings:
For changes like firewall adjustments or parental controls, check your admin tool. Use port triggering instead of port forwarding for better security when connecting devices like gaming consoles.
Keep ports closed when not in use to prevent unauthorized access.
