In the past, hotels always adopt a traditional way to deploy the telecommunication network, which requires multiple cables in a room. As we all know, there are many service systems in the hotel. Thus, the deployment of the cable and device is complicated and the burden of work is heavy.
If you have learned the difference between fiber-optic network and cable Internet, you will know that optical fiber can bring much more benefit. Going with the stream of technology and demands, V-SOL proposes the FTTx network: POL all-optical access solution to the hotel. with Before introducing the solution, let’s get to know the FTTx and PON briefly.
Part I. What is FTTx network?
FTTx means Fiber to the x, which is a total name of optical fiber networks. The “x” refers to the destination of the optical fiber route. There is FTTH (Fiber to the Home), FTTP (Fiber to the Premises), FTTC (Fiber to the Curb), etc.
There are two major methods for connecting the optical fiber to the ONU (Optical Network Unit) including P2P (Point to Point) and PON (Passive Optical Network) that adopts P2MP (Point to Mult-Point).
For an unprotected FTTx system with N terminal users at a distance of M km, 2N optical transceivers and NM km of fiber are required if a P2P approach is adopted. However, if a P2MP solution is chosen, N+1 optical transceivers, one or more (depending on the size of N) optical splitters, and about M km of optical fiber are demanded. Apparently, P2MP (PON) uses fewer optical transceivers and optical fiber than P2P.
In the optical fiber access network, if ODN consists of passive equipment without any active AP, this kind of network is called PON. It mainly broadcasts the optical signal from the OLT to ONU/ONT via optical splitter with one optical fiber, which largely reduces the cost of the network computer room and device maintenance. Moreover, the cost of deploying optical fiber will also be saved.
Part II. V-SOL FTTx Network: POL All-optical Access Solution to Hotel
POL (Passive Optical LAN) is a cost-effective FTTx networking method of LAN based on PON. Similar to other PON systems, POL is a P2MP network, having a splitter that can transmit the data from one point to multiple users’ ends. Besides, it achieves both-way communication with WDM. It’s capable of carrying services such as broadband, VOIP, WiFi, CATV, etc.
Shown as the image below, it demonstrates how V-SOL deploys all-optical networks to the hotel based on POL. The frame can be separated into 3 parts.
1. OLT
An OLT will be placed in the server room. It uplinks to the Switch and downlinks to control or manage ONU via ODN. One point that you need to pay attention to when you are selecting the OLT is security, which will influence the whole network of the hotel.
Citing V-SOL EPON V1600D4-DP as an example, there are 4 SEP Gigabit ports and 4 ports connecting uplink to the network. It supports DHCP snooping, DHCP option82, ACL. Moreover, the V-SOL OLT carries a firewall function. Many news has reported that lots of enterprises’ OLTs have been attacked by hackers or brute-forced login passwords and became paralyzed in 2020. The V-SOl OLT does well in security, which has successfully avoided several network attacks.
2. ODN
ODN is composed of optical fiber and optical splitter. The optical splitter is set up in the low voltage silo. ODN is responsible for providing ONU and OLT with tunnels for transmitting optical fiber. Optical fiber is more vulnerable than cable. Therefore, the construction, operation and maintenance of ODN are vital.
3. ONU
The ONU router will be deployed on the users’ end. According to the services of the hotel, there are different placement and usage.
Here we will introduce the connection of ONU by giving an example with V-SOL HG323RGWT(xPON) which is a 1GE+1FE+1POTS+CATV+WiFi ONU. It’s a xPON ONU that supports both EPON and GPON.
① An ONU will be equipped in each guest room. The smart locks can connect to the ONU to work. STB links upward to the RF OUT and downward to the TV. As for the telephone, connect it to the FXS port with a telephone wire. A laptop, cell phone and other devices can access the network by connecting the ONU WiFi.
② The ONU is also set up in the corridor, elevator or lobby door. The face recognition entrance guard and IP camera could connect to ONU with the wire. Other services like elevator monitoring or guard tour system can also connect to WiFi.
③ Similarly, in the lobby, restaurant or meeting room, the self-check-in machine, advertising machine, parking lot, etc. are enabled to connect to the network like above.
Besides, in this case, the AP is powered via the PoE injector.
Features of the solution:
- 1 fiber in 1 room: Only one fiber and one ONU/ONT will be set up in one room.
- 1 machine for multiple uses: One converged gateway can provide services such as enterprise routing, Internet logging and IPTV.
- 1 network for multiple functions: With one network, all occasions like guest rooms, corridors, restaurants, etc. can be covered signals.
Nowadays, the Internet of things has been more and more applied in our life. The intelligent hotel has gained the favor of many people. It’s important to provide high-quality services for the guests, which is the key to the sustainable development of a hotel. With the V-SOL POL all-optical access solution, a better FTTx network system will be built in the hotel with low cost, efficient energy, and high security.
