    Mitigating Generative AI Privacy Risks

    There is no doubt that generative AI solutions have become very popular since it helps many organizations to become very innovative and creative with their day-to-day activities. However, it comes with security and privacy concerns that can seriously damage an organization, assuming there’s any data leakage. This article will show you more methods through which you can avert generative artificial intelligence from compromising your organization’s privacy. 

    What is Generative AI? 

    Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that uses an extensive database or datasets to create new and refined information entirely different from what exists. This type of artificial intelligence uses an already existing database or patterns of data to create something unique for visual or text communications. 

    Compared to the traditional form of artificial intelligence, one could see a huge difference between the two regarding the way they function. Traditional artificial intelligence systems mostly come in handy while performing tasks such as classifying the information and using an existing set of instructions to monitor data traffic. Generative AI, on the other hand, is a refined form of artificial intelligence that uses highly sophisticated algorithms to interact and create information that is entirely different and relatable to humans. That’s why you would see systems like ChatGPT and other generative AI models chatting as if they are humans. 

    By integrating several machine learning techniques, generative AI technology can create many designs and data that are sometimes beyond human capacity. That’s why these generative AI solutions can be used to create things as complex as non-fungible tokens, videos, and images that haven’t been seen in the past. 

    How Does Generative AI Pose Privacy Risk? 

    Generally, there are always privacy concerns with the advent of artificial intelligence, but it has become an increasing concern with generative AI solutions. This is because, unlike traditional artificial intelligence, generative AI can create entirely new information from a large database. In other words, interactions with generative AI can give them access to personal and sensitive information they can reference or use while interacting with another group. 

    When interacting with generative AI, names, addresses, and contact details can be knowingly or unknowingly given out. The consequence is that generative AI technology might expose such sensitive information to the public. Assuming an individual’s privacy is overridden by a generative AI, their medical records, which they shared while interacting with the AI technology, might be shown to another person. 

    Because of the increasing privacy concerns around generative AI solutions, many organizations are banning their employees from using them. Even big tech companies such as Apple and Google have warned their workers sternly about using generative AI solutions like Bard.ai and ChatGPT. Using generative AI solutions in organizations might expose data that wasn’t meant to be revealed to the public. 

    How To Mitigate the Privacy Risks of Generative AI 

    • Consulting With AI Experts 

    Some organizations need the services of generative AI solutions but are afraid that using them on their business might lead to privacy infringement. Any organization in this situation should consult the services of generative AI experts. By collaborating with these experts, the organization would be further educated on the steps to prevent counter-productive generative AI solutions. 

    • Create Usage Policies 

    Generative AI has its benefits for many companies, so the major step such companies have to take to mitigate privacy risks is creating usage policies. Usage policies include the rules and regulations employees must abide by to ensure their interactions with these technologies won’t pose a security risk. Since many organizations access generative AI models with a web browser, creating and enforcing usage policies with browser security solutions like LayerX is a great idea. 

    • Training/Educating Employees 

    Education plays a huge role in an organization that wants to stop privacy concerns from using generative AI models. To prevent something like this from happening, proper authorization and verification systems should be in place to give employees access to these AI solutions. When something like this is available in an organization, only those with legitimate access to the generative AI would be given access to the operation. Even for those with legitimate access, they can be blocked whenever an unusual activity or behavior is detected. 

    • Availability of Monitoring Systems 

    Any organization serious about stopping or preventing privacy threats from generative AI solutions must have monitoring systems. Monitoring and cyber security systems like LayerX would block anyone from misusing or breaking usage policies. It would also alert an organization whenever the monitoring systems detect misuse or perceived cyber threats.
