Roulette is a hugely popular table game that’s very easy to play. It’s entirely based on luck, since all you’ve got to do is place your bet and hope for a win. There’s nothing you can do that can influence the game’s outcome – there’s no decision-making involved, nor can you get ahead by being skilled at the game. If you’re playing online roulette for real money, you’ll no doubt want to know if there’s anything you can do to help you win at roulette. Here are a few pointers to help boost your chances of scoring some wins.

European vs American Roulette

The premise of roulette is simple: a wheel’s spun, and if the ball lands in a numbered pocket covered by your bet, you win. There are two main versions of the game. The American version’s wheel has 38 pockets (numbers 1-36, plus 0 and 00). The European version, on the other hand, only has 37 pockets (numbers 1-36, plus 0). Since the European wheel has one less pocket, you have a slightly higher chance of winning if you play European roulette.

The Martingale Strategy

There are a number of betting strategies you can use to boost your chances of a roulette session becoming profitable. The Martingale strategy is best for players looking for short wins over short-term play – it’s not the best option for longer gaming sessions. The way this particular strategy works is straightforward: whenever you lose, you place the same bet with your wager doubled. This strategy is best used for bets that have a 50/50 chance of winning, e.g. red or black, odd or even, 1-18 or 19-36. No strategy is guaranteed to help you win, and this one is no different. You have to be careful when using it because if you’re unlucky and hit a losing streak, you could end up losing quite a lot of money before that win comes around.

The Reverse Martingale Strategy

This is essentially the opposite of the Martingale strategy. The way it works is as follows: whenever you lose, you decrease the size of your next bet; whenever you win, you increase the size of your next bet. The reasoning behind this particular strategy is that if you happen to experience a winning streak, you’ll capitalise on it and hopefully win quite a lot. Also, if you do happen to have a losing streak, it won’t be too much of a bad thing since your bets will be getting smaller and smaller, thereby reducing your losses. The downside is that if you have a winning streak then lose, your winnings are gone. Ideally, you’ll hit a winning streak then quit playing and walk away with a profit before you end up losing it all.

The D’Alambert Strategy

This is similar to the two Martingale ones in that it’s best used on 50/50 bets, but it’s considered to be a lot safer. To use it, simply up your bet by one whenever you lose and decrease it by one whenever you win. Once you’ve racked up an equal number of losses and wins, end the gaming session, and you will have a profit. To use this successfully, you do have to keep count of how many times you’ve lost, and how many times you’ve won. Even so, the strategy’s designed so that if you’ve lost and win and equal number of times, you’re guaranteed to have made at least some money.
