User Interface and User Experience (UI/UX) are turning out to be crucial factors that can help propel a website, company, or brand to the heights of success. UI/UX greatly increases customer satisfaction, which in turn adds value to the company. A number of organizations are open to spending big bucks to offer a simpler user interface along with a pleasing user experience. Quite naturally, companies with expansive budgets would wish to hire an individual who can deliver as per their expectations.
The nature of the job of a UI/UX designer involves the creativity paired with visual skills and understanding that may be polished through a UI/UX design course. Most importantly, you should be willing to learn every day and to try out new things.
If you wish to hone your UI/UX skills, here are some tips that will greatly help you:
1. Establish a Target Audience
Quite naturally, businesses aim for reaching out to a particular set of clients. Thus, the designing must also cater to that user base. As a designer, you should factor in the purpose and considerations during the designing process.
Are you reaching out to seniors who are not well-versed with the internet? Keep it simple and clean without overwhelming them.
Does the website market content to tech-savvy visitors? Then have a funky design with engaging material that appeals to them!
Will people use the mobile-version too? Include mobile-friendly designing.
It’s all about identifying the niche crowd and finding what fits.
2. Consider the User’s PoV
A good UI/UX designer is also a good user.
You need to put yourself in the visitor’s shoes to understand what they expect and how the layout unfolds. Think of the major elements that the users would be interacting with. Make them prominent. Ensure that important information is clearly visible, highlighted, and accessible. Stick to streamlined designs that are user-effective.
Quite obviously, implementing this would be much easier when you already know your audience.
3. Choose Your Fonts Wisely
Think of a professional web page written completely in Comic Sans!
Fonts are highly underrated but are a vital design consideration. It can drastically improve the visual appeal of a website, thereby enhancing the UI/UX.
That does not necessarily mean that you have to always stick to boring or sophisticated fonts. Have fun with fonts as per your design plan! As long as the readability is not affected and the font goes with the general theme, you are good to go.
4. Avoid Designs with Never ending Scrolling
The first thing that ever UI/UX design training institute teaches you is that you should avoid inconvenience to the user at all costs. Having to scroll through a bottomless website feels like a nightmare. To avoid causing any frustration, avoid endless scrolling whether it is due to a design consideration or a technical glitch.
If your website does have a large amount of content, go through the various scrolling options and choose one accordingly. Some of the common scrolling patterns and their uses are outlined below:
- Long Scroll: Used for websites where content is diverse and gets refreshed periodically, like social media websites!
- Fixed Long Scroll: Used where you are displaying information that is to be displayed in separate sections. It usually introduces scrolling within a scroll.
- Infinite Scroll: May be used for presenting multimedia content in the form of galleries on a single page. This keeps the user engaged without having to click or wait.
- Parallax Scroll: Mostly used in video games, parallax scroll uses layered 2D images that move at different speeds when you scroll – this gives it a 3D feel.
5. Conduct Reviews and Keep Improving
It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to review your UI/UX designs. Use various tools to keep testing your designs at every step of the designing process. Test out the various interactive buttons, toolbars, controls, panels, icons, etc. to see if they are responsive to user input.
In fact, test the website even after the website is live. Check the effectiveness of the website and the value added by the designs. Quite often, the purpose of the website changes as the business develops. So, periodical review will allow you to include the latest information and updates.
Spend time reflecting on analytics that you collect so that you can offer an even better UI/UX experience to the users.
