5 Data Backup Mistakes Even Seasoned IT Professionals Make
Data loss is one of the most frustrating things that any organization has to deal with. A shocking 31% of PC users have lost all of their files from a hard drive failure. The best way to prevent it is to make sure that your data is regularly backed up. Unfortunately, there are a number of mistakes that people make when doing a backup. They don’t usually realize they are making these mistakes, so they are lulled into a false sense of security.
If you are handling your own data backups, it’s important to make sure you are aware of the many ways that things can go wrong. Here are a few of the biggest mistakes that even many professional IT experts make.
Neglecting to save the history of their data
Static data backups can create a whole host of problems. If you don’t have a history of your data, then you might unwittingly lose any data after the next backup point or accidentally saved alterations that you didn’t intend. You might have unwittingly deleted a sensitive file before the next schedule backup. If you don’t have a history, then it might be lost forever.
Storing all of your data on-site
Before the invention of the cloud, most people kept copies of their data in the same location. This was a reliable safeguard in case a hard drive failed. Since hard drives are notoriously unreliable, this was a valid concern. Unfortunately, there were a number of other problems that left the data vulnerable. It could still be destroyed in a fire or stolen during a burglary.
This is why it is more important than ever to make copies of data offsite with a reliable disk copying tool. The good news is that cloud makes this easier than ever.
Relying too heavily on manual backups – or not performing them when necessary
Far too many people rely on manual data backups. The problem is that it is very difficult to be consistent. There are so many things that you need to think about all the time. Backing up your data is usually at the bottom of the list. We don’t think it’s a huge priority, until something happens in our data is lost.
At the same time, there are times when it is necessary to back up your data. If you make a very important change, you need to make sure that it is not lost before the next schedule backup.
Not relying on a secure cloud server to store it
You probably already understand the benefits of storing data on the cloud. You also realize that the cloud is the perfect place to back it up.
But where should you back up your data on the cloud? There are a lot of different cloud servers out there. Some of them are much more secure than others. If you don’t store your valuable data on a secure server, then it could still be targeted and destroyed by malicious third parties. They could override all of your important files, which means that you won’t be able to recover it unless you are able to retrieve historical data records.
Be careful when backing up your data
Performing a data backup isn’t easy. There are a lot of things that can go wrong, especially if you don’t recognize other possible mistakes. Make sure you were aware of these possible problems and take the right steps to prevent them.
