If you delete some important files in Windows, it’s able to get them back in most cases. After deleting a file in Windows, it’s will not be wiped from the computer permanently. Instead, it just mark the files as deleted and the space can be reused by new data. If there is new data added then, it would use the space and damage the deleted data. So the first thing you need to do is stop using the drive to avoid writing new data to the drive.
Now you can try the following ways to retrieve the deleted files in different cases. Here I will show you the most common ways to recover deleted files in Windows. You can check and try the specified method based on your own situations.
Restore deleted files directly from Recycle Bin
Normally, the deleted files will be put into Recycle Bin first unless the files are too large for Recycle Bin to hold. Then it will be very easy to find the files in Recycle Bin and you can restore the files directly. Just get into Recycle Bin from the icon on desktop. Choose the deleted files and right-click, choose Restore option to undelete the files.
Tips: To locate the wanted files quickly, you can change the View to Details for the Recycle Bin. Then you can see the Original Location of the deleted files.
As mentioned before, if the selected files are too big to recycle, the files will be deleted directly without going into the Recycle bin. Also, if you deleted files with Shif +Del, the files will also be removed and you can find the files in Recycle bin. In such a case, you can only try the following methods.
Restore deleted files with File History
Did you also empty the Recycle Bin after deleting the important files? If you have a backup for you files/folders, then it will not be hard to recover the deleted files. You can use the Windows built-in tool File History that allows to restore accidentally deleted or modified files/directories quite simply and quickly. Here are the steps to follow.
Step 1. Locate the folder or drive where you delete the files. Click History button to see the versions of the backup.
Step 2. It will then pop up the File History window. You can check the versions of the backup to find the correct version that contains the deleted files.
Step 3. After finding version that contains the deleted files, you can click the green Restore button to restore the files back to the original location.
Note: It will restore the files to the original location. If there are existing files with the same names, you have to choose to replace the existing files or other operations. Actually, you can also restore the files to another location instead. Please right-click the folder that contains the deleted files, click “Restore previous version”. Please choose the correct version based on the time information and choose “Restore To…” to restore the files to another specified location.
Recover deleted files with Windows File Recovery
What can we do if the files were deleted from Recycle Bin and no any backups available? Don’t worry. Microsoft offers a free file recovery tool available in the Microsoft Store. However, the app requires Windows 10 May 2020 Update or higher. If you are using the latest version of Windows, you can try this method to recover the deleted files. It’s a command line app that can help you recover deleted files with a simple command.
After installing the app on your computer, you can then open command prompt and enter the command to start the file recovery directly. If you only need to recover the deleted files, you can just use the following command:
winfr source-drive: destination-folder: [/switches]
Source-drive: The drive where you deleted the files.
Destination-folder: the location where you want to save the recovered files.
For example, if you deleted a file named “1.txt” from the folder test on F drive and want to save the recovered files to E drive, please enter the following command:
winfr F: E: /n test\1.txt
Recover deleted files with Do Your Data Recovery
If you the recycle bin was emptied with no backup available, and you are using a system old than Windows 10 May 2020 Update, there is still an easy way for you to recover deleted files. It’s normal to add or remove files on your computer. You may delete some important files by accidentally sometime. How to protect and avoid the file loss? I suggest you back up your files regularly and also allocate more space for Recycle Bin.
Backup your files regularly
The Windows system provide the free and strong backup tool. You can use it to back up your data regularly. If you often use the computer to deal with files, it’s highly suggest to back up more frequently. You can search for “Backup Settings” to find the backup function directly. It provides the options to back up using File History.
If you want to create full backup of your system drive and selected files, you can also use the older Backup and Restore option. It can not only back up the personal files, but also the system.
Allocate more space for Recycle Bin
The Recycle Bin function is to give you a chance to regret. So it’s better to deleted your files to Recycle Bin. You can still have a chance to restore them directly if you deleted some important files by mistake. However, if the size of the deleted files is too big to Recycle Bin, the files will be deleted permanently. To avoid such a case, you can right-click the Recycle Bin > Properties, then change the size of Recycle Bin to hold more deleted files.
