WordPress is more than just a blogging tool. It has evolved to be the CMS platform that bloggers, small business owners, and even online stores prefer among all others. Although the site alone is incredibly functional, there are still some really useful features that can enhance your WordPress site. It doesn’t matter if you lead a blog for chatting site, travel or business advice column – all these features are still great to use in WordPress CMS.

1. Feature Image

When you are choosing a theme for your WordPress site, there are a few themes that already incorporates “Feature Image” into the design. However, you don’t have to have one of these themes to be able to use the feature. One of the main reasons why folks aren’t using this feature is because it was added to the 2.9 release of the platform. This means that if you’re using an older version, you may not know that it is part of the toolkit. Another reason it is under-utilized is that people just don’t know what it is used for.

The “Feature Image” is great if you want to have display picture that is associated with a post or product on your site. The beauty of this feature is that you don’t have to worry about resizing the picture or creating a thumbnail because the feature does it for you. It lets you create a thumbnail of your desired picture on social media sites and it gives you control how your website appears on Facebook.

2. Screen Options

There are plenty of people who are content with the basic features on WordPress because they are right there in plain view. Did you know that these aren’t the only features available to you though? You can find more features under the “Screen Options” located at the top right-hand corner of the different sections. Some of these options include:

  • Excerpt – Allows you to create excerpts of your posts
  • Author – Allows you to change the author of your post if you have more than one contributor
  • Slug – Allows you to change the URL of the post so you can use a keyword to improve SEO rank

3. Scheduled Posts

If the ideas just kept coming to you for new posts and you created a lot of content you want to use, you can use the “Schedule Post” feature to schedule the posts for you. There are many bloggers who don’t even realize this feature is available, and because of that, they are left with the task of having to remember to post each day, whereas if they just scheduled the posts, they could schedule and forget it. This is also a useful feature for bloggers who have giveaways on their site. You can have the giveaway all ready and have it go live exactly when you tell your readers (bloggers tend to make their giveaways start at midnight) it will start without having the possibility of forgetting about it.

4. Sticky Posts

Let’s face it, not every post is going to get the attention it deserves. With these posts, you probably don’t mind so much if they fade from the front page of your site. However, if you have content that is really useful and could benefit a lot of people, you’ll want to keep it easily accessible to your future visitors. With the “Sticky Post” feature, you can make that post stay on the front page at all times (well, until you remove it). To use this feature, click on the “Edit” link next to the “Visibility” option on the “Publish” block of your post. Click on the box where it says “Stick this post to the front page.” Keep in mind that the spot where your post will be visible depends on what kind of theme you are using.

5. More Tag

When you look at blogs, and you see that they have what looks like an incomplete post on their page, they are using the More Tag, which, when written in HTML code looks like this:

By using this tag, you can split up your posts or even hide the photos of a heavy image post, this quickening your page load speeds.
